OUR OWN WORST ENEMIES
The Shooting Community Needs to Become More Vocal.
Something that becomes apparent as you spend time in the shooting world is that shooters in Australia really seem to be their own worst enemies.
What is meant by this is that all the little niche’s within the shooting industry are separate and dont really aid or help each other. No one jumps to the defense of pistol shooters doing IPSC when restrictions are placed on what can and cant be done. No one voices concerns outside of duck hunters when duck hunting bans start coming in. The same with other forms of hunting, clays, pistols and rifle formats.
It is like shooters think that keeping their heads down and trying not to be noticed is how they will avoid getting restrictions placed on their little niche. However, that isn’t how things work.
This is why it is so easy for the government and anti-gun groups to take apart the gun industry. Death by a thousand cuts, a tightening of legislations here, a new law there and suddenly a whole range of weapons become illegal to own based on something as ridiculous as “they look dangerous” or “the barrel is 2mm too short” or the gun comes with a “10 round magazine but it doesn’t have a pin in it”.
All of these changes to rules ought to be vocally and unanimously called out by the whole gun community for what they are, which is authoritarianism gone wild. The whole gun community all at once, regardless of which aspect of the sport is under attack. If pistol shooters are the flavour of the day for government and police then they should be getting support from hunters and rifle target shooters, and vice versa.
When new laws are being implemented they are being done so to make a government officials look like it is doing something to stop gun violence (normally during an election period) but anything they bring into law will do nothing to combat gun violence as criminals don’t give a damn about laws… that is why they are called criminals. For some reason though, police and government seem to be obtusely ignorant of this and lump in perfectly legal, law abiding and responsible gun owners with these criminals.
As such, when all of these new laws are brought in or even more ridiculous laws regarding toy guns such as gel blasters, air soft and kids toy guns the immediate response from the entire community should be outrage at more 1984 level Chi-Com overreach and pandering to a mostly ignorant public who are only basing their opinions on emotion and the misleading (and outright lies) spewed by media and anti-gun lobby; the silence for the most part is deafening though. Then of course, there is SSAA and its seemingly total lack of a spine when it comes to taking hard stances.
This country is already far too regulated as far as we at WP are concerned. We aren’t calling for constitutional rights to conceal carry like in America as we know that we would never see that happen no matter how much we think it would be a good idea. We are however asking for some actual common sense (not police and government “common” sense, which isn’t that common and doesn’t make sense most of the time) gun laws.
It would also be nice if the pro-gun organisations actually worked together and as a single voice for all of the members they are supposed to represent.
Just an opinion.
